Journal Entry 9

The Author gives good examples of perfect portfolio's for software based designers, however for people who are not software based the online portfolios tend to be harder to manage. The primary reason for the harder management would be the extra time required to scan in or take pictures of their work to load into the site.

I prefer the Flash Portfolio option primarily because I can customize it almost entirely for whatever is needed to show to a possible employer.

You can use Flash Animation in your logo and also in more not so noticable ways so as to not take away from the main attraction that is the portfolio itself.

From what I've learned so far, it is quite possible to create my own personal portfolio. However I would like to have more professional items to add to it in order for it to be more pleasing to possible employers.

1. the author recomends to use a web based portfolio that uses either blog format, pdf or flash.

2. the only drawback to creating any of the portfolios would be flash if you are unfamiliar with the program.

3. The author states that you can have your web based portfolio be two-sided having a professional side to showcase your work and having a personal side for side projects and fun that you can customize as much as you want.

probably the most difficult thing to learn so far would be complex animations primarily because each action has a preaction and making sure they look natural is harder than it sounds.

The biggest helper for flash is to have real motion images to help you reference your animation sequences  to make the animation smoother and more natural looking.

In order to speed up anything you need to have a concrete grasp on what you want the end product to look like and a guide to keep you on track throughout the project. if you dont storyboard all possible events first then you will end up getting side tracked which can slow your workflow down considerably especially if your project starts to take a completely different turn from what you were originally intending.

1. As far as advantages goes, it is easy to do motion and color changes in flash via the tweening objects instead of going through frame by frame animation. With flash you dont need an animation studio to help produce a quality cartoon, just a computer with the software and knowledge on how to use it.

2. As it is easy to do the tweens you still need to go through all the frames to make sure everything is going smoothly, i have seen several flash animations on the web where the designer failed to check his work before publishing and saw very noticable flaws in the animation.

Try to explain to the client that the designer that originally worked on their projects is no longer with the company. Also explain that what they mean is a header, not an ad banner, by describing both, and then proceed to ask the client which one he actually wants before going through with anything. If the client is still unsure then give demonstrations on both to show what they are. After the client has chosen what he wants, then proceed to go through with the selection.
